Accountable Care Organizations & IT

ACO’s – the latest acronym that is demanding my attention.  Accountable Care Organizations (ACO’s) are one of the by-products of the 2010 Health Care Reform law. As with so many “new ideas”, ACO’s are some old ideas under a new acronym, they sound reasonable and they promise something we all are for – lower cost, higher quality health care.

Like so many other new ideas, there is more there than meets the eye and execution / implementation aren’t quite as easy as you would think.  “An ACO is like a unicorn; everyone thinks they know what one is, but no one has ever seen one,” says Gene Lindsey, president and chief executive of Atrius Health. “A few months ago, I announced to our organization, ‘We are an ACO.’ “

As I start learning about ACO’s to understand their impact on the home health care industry and the data initiatives and opportunities we are working on, there are a few things for certain:

  1. A lot of money will be spent creating ACO’s long before the cost saving benefits are realized.
  2. Information Technology (IT) will play a central role in the formation, execution and justification for an ACO.
  3. Consultants and attorneys will make a lot of money.
  4. Home health care, with their limited IT budgets and data connectivity (as compared to large health systems) are behind the curve, and possibly more at risk, when it comes to ACO’s.
  5. Where there is change, there is opportunity.

As with other “new ideas” and acronyms, like HIPAA and cloud computing, it pays to take the time up front to understand what is being “sold” and what is required.  Take some time to learn how ACO’s impact the home infusion and specialty pharmacy providers in your market area and carefully get involved.  Find the opportunity that waits for you, and proceed with caution and with the facts.

Rock-Pond is taking their customers to Paradise

Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville at Universal City Walk has been reserved for Rock-Pond’s 2011 customer/friend appreciation event as part of the 2011 NHIA Annual Conference.

According to company President Pete Tanguay, “NHIA is celebrating its 20th Annual Conference and I’ve been there since the first one in Nashville in 1991.  For many of us, it is as much a reunion and networking event as it is an educational opportunity.  We’re excited to host a party at Margaritaville and catch up with all of our old and new friends in the industy”.

Rock-Pond mines old MBI system to support NHIA’s Data Initiative

Rock-Pond was recently contacted by a company who needed to get the data out of an old MBI system to complete their survey for the NHIA Data Initiative. The NHIA Data Initiative is pulling industry data from 2008 and this is the system they used at this time.  Rock-Pond developed a FREE Data Collector Tool and reports to facilitate easy data collection by participants and provided support when companies had questions.

This is the final week for the NHIA Data Initiative – Phase 1 and Rock-Pond Solutions has been busy helping providers meet this important deadline.  With this last minute request we’re pulling data out of an old DOS based system that was widely used in the early days of the home infusion industry.

Rock-Pond’s president, Pete Tanguay, has been involved in the industry since 1987 and was also the founder and developer of the MBI software.  Rock-Pond’s ability to pull data from almost any data source no matter how old it is and turn it into powerful information continues to make a difference for home infusion providers.

Data is data, no matter the source or format.  Rock-Pond’s mission is to give you the information you need from the data you’ve got.

NHIA Data Survey Deadline is November 15

Rock-Pond encourages all home infusion providers to participate in the NHIA 2010 Survey.

The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) has been collecting data from their members for almost a year now and the deadline is drawing near.  November 15, is the deadline for getting this survey completed and returned to NHIA.

As of November 4, they have received just over 200 surveys from 26% of their member sites.  If you want your company’s data to be included in the survey you have ten days to compile the data, download the Rock-Pond Data Collector, and submit your survey.   The survey should not take too much of your time, especially considering the impact the survey could have on current legislation regarding the home infusion industry. Upon completion of the survey, you will receive a complimentary copy of the nation-wide data to compare to your own response.

For more information and to take the survey go the NHIA website.

Rock-Pond Solutions has supported this initiative by developing a FREE Data Collector for home infusion providers. Rock-Pond is a member of the NHIA Data Initiative Committee and believes our collective efforts will make a difference.

Tanguay to Speak at NHIA 2010

nhia_2010

Rock-Pond’s president, Pete Tanguay, will present “Understanding and Reducing the Costs of Billing and Getting Paid” on April 13 at the 2010 NHIA Annual Conference in Dallas, TX. Originally Pete was asked by the NHIA educational committee on cost effective use of technology in a home infusion department.  He pointed out that technology is only as good as the problem it solves and understanding and reducing reimbursement costs is very high on the priority list of home infusion providers.

The preliminary course outline is as follows:  “The reimbursement process begins with a patient referral and ends with payment for services, or at least this is the plan. There are specific costs associated with this process and additional costs incurred when you don’t do each area well. This program will present a comprehensive reimbursement model along with specific metrics and recommendations to follow in order to minimize the cost and time it takes to get paid for services. It will emphasize the advantage of using technology to measure and streamline your reimbursement process.”

Rock-Pond Solutions will also be exhibiting at the conference.
